Eclipse Notes: September Newsletter
Last weekend, I joined the rest of Los Angeles and watched Oasis play the Rose Bowl. The first time I saw them perform was in 1994 at the old 9:30 Club in DC, where the capacity was officially 199, though there were at least twice as many people in the crowd. This was after the release of Definitely Maybe and before Wonderwall came out and transformed them into a chart topping juggernaut, fueled by sibling rivalry, zipped up anoraks and awesome bucket hats. I was never a staunch Oasis fan, but that DC show was one of my first club show experiences and left an indelible mark on my still pubescent brain. At the Pasadena show, sitting pretty in some sweet seats (nice one, Bertie) with the light of the freshly eclipsed Pisces full moon streaming down upon the masses, I spent a decent amount of time looking up at the sky and thinking about time, change, and inevitable transformation.
To go from a 200 cap club to a 90,000 seat stadium is a meteoric shift—something that would almost be as shocking to little ol’ teenaged Me as the fact that I live in Los Angeles, a city I now love deeply but never considered habitable when I was a kid. Back then it was New York or bust. I really enjoy it when Current Me surprises Past Me.
Eclipses come in pairs and I like to think of them as gateways to new planes, if not new dimensions. We’re neck deep in the muck of the middle period between the bookending eclipses, a potent timeframe of WTF energy. Could something insane occur during this period? Sure. But for most of us, it’s just a soupy cauldron of weird vibes and potential and a chance to observe, focus, and re-organize. You don’t have to figure it all out. You just have to sit in all the chaos and discomfort and realize that this is when you can really weed out the old BS and reshape your life, your way. Can you do that at any time? Of course. But this squirrelly period is ripe for shaking things up and leaping forward. Take some baby steps or start sketching some broad strokes. If you feel overwhelmed right now, that’s normal. Keep going! As I often tell myself when purging and deep cleaning (which I despise doing), it always looks messiest right before you get it the way you want it.
I’ve been interested in astrology and other esoteric arts since before my first Oasis show, buying a Rider-Waite deck in 9th grade at the Borders Books in Towson and begging my parents to translate my Sa-joo, a form of Korean fortunetelling. I think I’ve always loved mystical things for three main reasons: the sense of awe that comes with the unknown, a love for the stories encapsulated by the symbols, and a deep desire to understand and probably have some sense of control (however false or superficial) in my life. As I get older, I’m less interested in the control and more fascinated by the understanding. A lot of that understanding requires reflection, neutrality, release, forgiveness and deep appreciation.
Right now, between the two eclipses, is a great time to reflect. When you look at your life, are you pleasantly surprised by what you see? How do you truly feel, not just in your heart but also in your body? Would the teenaged version of you be slightly awed by who you’ve become? Do you spend your day doing what you hoped you’d be doing? How have your desires changed? What goals, relationships or habits have you outgrown? Think about yourself ten or twenty years from now. If you could give some honest advice to yourself, what would it be? What would Future You be proud of and grateful that you started Right Now?
These are just some of the things I’ve been asking myself. I’m observing Present Me and thanking Past Me and getting advice from Future Me. There’s no better period to time travel and hang with all the versions of yourself than the weeks between a pair of eclipses.
It’s never too late to adjust or change. You’re never too old to be different. It’s easier than you think to let go. You can always honor the past without having to drag it along with you. Step through the portal and enjoy the ride!
